Human Computer Interaction As It Relates To Web Design
Human Computer Interaction is the study and planning of how a user and a computer will interact with each other (i.e. What will happen when a user clicks a button on the page with their mouse). As is always mentioned, one should keep the potential user of your website in mind while designing the site. A part of researching the HCI is deciding the user’s goals will be from using your website.
Before you start cranking out your web page, one should conceptualize it and draw out the basic design of your site. Once the general layout is done, create some user scenarios of how certain tasks will be accomplished. Just map out the path from point A to point B.
It should be simplistic, for example: Clicking on the “Account” link should go to the “Account” page. Straightforward site navigation is always listed as a good web design practice. In general, all potential functions of the website should have scenarios of possible outcomes. These scenarios will also play apart in the testing of the website before it is released for public use.
Also when creating a website, the creator needs to be mindful of the current standards that are widely used and therefore what people are used to seeing. Using Blue underlined text that is not a hyperlink can be annoying to users who were expecting it to be. If you are using pictures as links, the pictures should have some indication of what they are a link to.
